'The Demons' DVD Review

There is trouble in Montreal. A string of kidnappings have occurred and it is the talk of the town. A young ten year old boy by the name of Félix (Edouard Tremblay-Grenier) is scared about it all. The school year is about to end and Félix has a very vivid imagination. He also is very sensitive and impressionable. He lives in one of the suburbs of Montreal so he’s not exactly right in the middle of everything.

Félix is also scared that his mother Claire (Pascale Bussieres) and father Marc (Laurent Lucas) are going to break up. His mother and father can have some serious arguments and this bothers him when he witnesses them fighting. Félix also gets scared when his brother Francois (Vassili Schneider) talks with his friends about all the bad things that are happening to all the neighborhood children.

Félix is loved by both his brother Francois and sister Emmanuelle (Sarah Mottet). Félix confided to his sister that he thought he might have AIDS. You see this is the period where AIDS first appears and everybody gets freaked out. Emmanuelle ask Félix some questions and then tells him he is fine and not to worry. Félix is simply growing up and is becoming of age to be a teenager.

Director Philippe Lesage is responsible for 'The Demons' and the later film 'Genese' which has Félix once again as an older teenager. Growing up is not so simple as it use to be. Thus films like these are
beneficial in ways that sometime people miss the signs of the young as they grow up.

'Genese' DVD Review

Our story deals with the coming of age sexuality of three teenagers. Guillaume (Theodore Pellerin) is away at boarding school. He has a charismatic personality and is a hit in the classroom. He also has feelings for a fellow student by the name of Nicolas (Jules Roy Sicotte). Guillaume and Nicolas are best friends but the feelings of Guillaume go beyond friendship. One scene has the boys at a party. Guillaume is walking across the dance floor through a sea of heterosexuality. He sees Nicolas but is very awkward when he finally reaches the other teen. Guillaume even considers going out for the hockey team that Nicolas plays for. In other words Guillaume has problems with his sexuality and doesn’t know what to do, but then again what 16 does.

Now Charlotte (Noee Abita) Guillaume’s older half sister doesn’t have a problem with her sexuality. What her problem is that the young men she meets doesn’t want a true relationship. They simply want the sex which makes Charlotte uncomfortable with people. Charlotte does have a geeky boyfriend by the name of Maxime (Pier-Luc Funk). The problem is that one day Maxime comes to Charlotte and expresses his feelings about having an open relationship. In other words he can do what he wants when he wants with whoever he wants to and then come back to Charlotte for sex. Charlotte does drop him for an older guy by the name of Theo (Maxime Dumontier). Unfortunately, after a brief fling Charlotte has no more interest in Theo.Felix (Edouard Tremblay-Grenier) meets his young Beatrice (Emilie Bierre) at summer camp. The two teens have mutual love for each other and you could call them the Adam and Eve of our story.

'Yesterday Was A Lie' DVD Review

Hoyle (Kipleigh Brown) is a female detective with a very sharp mind is after a reclusive genius by the name Dudas (John Newton). Hoyle’s main problem is that she likes bourbon too much which hinders her from doing her job sometimes. Dudas is believed to be able to distort reality which has Hoyle questioning her own reality. Hoyle does have a sidekick who is a nightclub singer(Chase Masterson) who at times doles put insider information but only when she feels it’s necessary.

Hoyle does have a loyal partner who we know as trench coat man (Mik Scriba). These two are Hoyle’s only allies as she plunged into the dark world of intrigue and earth shattering secrets. Hoyle is haunted by a mysterious shadow (Peter Mayhew) who she eventually comes face to face with. Hoyle eventually learns some truths that come through some hard facts. That the most powerful force of the universe is the power to bend reality and to know the truth comes through the knowledge that it all lies within each individual’s heart.

The film is shot in black and white and with a jazz soundtrack add some interesting visual effects makes for a compelling film. The director of the film is James Kerwin who does a wonderful job of keeping the viewer on their toes. You will have to watch this film without interruption or you will simply miss it.

'Scared Of Revolution' DVD Review

Umar Bin Hassan has been called the “The Godfather of Rap”. He was born Jerome Huling and in the late 1960’s  became a member of The Last Poets. They were a group of performance poets who pushed the spirit of the times and became a big influence on hip-hop artists. One of his better known pieces is 'Niggers Are Scared of Revolution' where he criticized his fellow blacks destructive nature of the times.

Director Daniel Krikke takes a look at the life of Umar Bin Hassan from childhood to now. For instance, his own father would steal the money that a young Hassan would make shining shoes. His father would later abandon the family and Hassan was basically on his own. His mother would give him money and he would go and buy drugs. He goes on to say that drugs were a big part of his life. Hassan would go through woman like a turn style and would leave his children without any father figure. He would eventually make some money but would buy crack cocaine and wander around aimlessly.

As the documentary goes on to show it was Hassan who was afraid of Revolution. He would finally take control of his life. We see a very distraught Hassan talking about his father who he would later reconcile with and would eventually had to make the decision to turn off his fathers life support. We see a man who hadn’t reached 70 but looked like a very beat up old man. We see a man who would eventually reconcile with his children and would be a grandfather to their children which is something he never experienced as a child.

Film Movement brings this story to DVD on November 12th, 2019. The quality of the DVD is fantastic and the sights and sounds are superb. You see a life full of heartbreak but you also see the transformation of a man. This is a good addition to that personal library you may have in your home. It would also be a great gift for the holidays to that special someone.

'Mehsampur' DVD Review

Filmmaker Devrath (Devrath Joshi) is a very oddbal sort of fellow. He has very little money but he wants to make a film on the folk singing husband and wife team Chamkila and Amarjot. The legendary duo sing bawdy songs on the Punjabi culture and village life. The pair are loved and also scorned for their music and eventually would be Assassinated in 1988.  Most documentaries are based on fact but Mehsampur is often called a docufiction. You do get to meet Tiki who was their manager. You will meet Surinder Sonia a collaborator and Lal Chand a dholak player.

Devrath becomes aware of another film crew also doing a documentary on the the husband and wife folk singers. The other crew have way more funds for their project than Devrath so he interviews the above people involved in the life of the dead singers. Devrath has been staying in a run down hotel and comes across a young actress being chased by a group of lechers who want to molest the young lady. He saves her and in return she accompanies Devrath and Lal on a road trip to the place where the singers were murdered. The village of Mehsampur is not far but the journey is interesting to say the least.

The film doesn’t give us detailed account on the murders. It does give us a brief look on the pair as to how they lived but it does enlighten us as to how life has simply moved on after their death. It is sometimes a psychedelic look at life but it does show us Indian cinema in a way we’ve never seen before.IndiePix Films brings us this interesting film to DVD on October 29th, 2019. 'Sisters Of The Wilderness' DVD Review

This Documentary of five young Zulu women heading  off into the wilderness of the South African iMfolozi is the journey of a lifetime. The women come from underprivileged backgrounds and carry all their equipment on their backs. They are led by the first woman wilderness guide in South Africa Lihle Mbokazi. The ladies live and camp under the stars. They are in what’s called big game country and they are exposed and face the elements at their best. The challenges are many but the woman are up to it. The women have never experienced true nature as they are now and this is certainly a life changing experience.

The Zulu people use to live in the iMfolozi wilderness and had an almost spiritual experience when they were there. Mother Nature took care of her young and the children worshipped her. With a coal mine now in the area and Rhino poaching taking its toll on the animals almost to extinction  the woman begin to learn the true majesty of the land. The women learn that nature needs man and man needs nature to continue an existence on this planet. Lihle along with two other guides Janet and Zondi the women learn how to take care of themselves and the group. Especially at night when it’s just one lady on guard duty and they see the eyes of a cat just sitting there observing them. Then maybe the Elephant that wanders by and you have to make sure all are ok. The charging Rhino also teaches one how to care for themselves and others. The women learn so much about themselves and life they come away from this experience changed forever.

IndiePix Films brings this wonderful story of life and living to DVD to us on October 22nd, 2019. The quality of the DVD is pure excellence. The sights and sounds are superb. The iMfolozi is a beautiful area but with one coal mine already there and another possibly coming the land could go away in a very short time. Possibly with films like these we may change that course of destruction and keep this wilderness thriving for many years. This is an excellent addition to that personal library and with the holidays just around the corner it would be an amazing gift.

'An Israeli Love Story' DVD Review

Margalit (Adi Bielski) is an 18 year old young girl who is aspiring to be an actress. She lives in northern Israel in 1947. Israel is not yet a state of its own and there are many problems among its people. While traveling to watch a play in Haifa, Margalit meets a young man named Eli (Avraham Aviv Alush). Eli lives on a Kibbutz and has all his life. Eli works in the Palmach which is the pre state army underground. The two youngsters will eventually meet again and the romance begins. As time goes on Margalit moves to Eli’s Kibbutz and the talk of marriage begins.

This is a true love story and is based on fact. The story is about theater director Pnina Gary and Eli Ben-Zvi the son of Israel’s second president Yitzhak Ben-Zvi. They met, fell in love and did it all while Israel was becoming a state in 1947. Dan Wolman is the director of this love story and in all his comments he has said it is nothing more than a Love Story. Everyone wants to say it’s got a political backdrop to it but in reality it is still just a love story. For you see in every relationship there is always ups and downs. People are still people no matter what’s going on around them. Love does conquer all this story is so true to that.
