Detective Sergeant Marcella Backland (Anna Friel) took a break from the force to raise her children. She thought that what she was doing was a good thing but her husband couldn’t deal with it and left the marriage. On the job she’s an ace detective. Her home life is questionable at best. Backland eventually goes back to the metropolitan police only to jump head first into an old cold case.
The Grove Park Killer, a serial killer that hadn’t been caught and has now resurfaced and is killing again. Backland is getting into the case more and more and because of the break up of her marriage and the job of raising her children herself, it has turned her into a broken person. Her fragile state begins to show in ways like blackouts and some serious rage that everyone is noticing. The straw that seems to break the camels back is when a close friend to her ex-husband (Nicholas Pinnock) is murdered. Backland feels that in this latest murder she might have been involved. Backland is being stretched way to thin and it shows.
The beauty of this show is the cast because along with Anna Friel you have Laura Carmichael, Jamie Bamber, Maeve Dermody, Nina Sosanya, Ray Panthaki, Sinead Cusack and Harry Lloyd. Marcella is an intriguing look into the Metropolitan Police Force. Men and women each day put their lives on the line to protect us from many different aspects of society gone wrong. What we usually don’t take into consideration are the people themselves. That they might be married with children, or have broken marriages, or of personal struggles that we can only guess at.
