Helen Hewitt (Janet McTeer) has been sent to Barfield Prison to look into an inmates death that is very suspicious in nature. The governor of the prison soon loses her job due to the investigation that Hewitt is leading. What Hewitt doesn’t realize is that she is about to become the Governor of Barfield Prison. This in itself wouldn’t be such a big deal except that she is a female in charge of a male populated prison. Hewitt is greeted with open hostility from the inmates and the guards and prison staff in general are not too happy about having a female boss. Hewitt has walked into a mine field so to speak with this assignment.
Barfield Prison has just gotten over a severe riot right before Hewitt's arrival so it was still touchy between the guards and inmates. Hewitt was also a young woman with little to no experience as a Governor. She came into the job with all kinds of new ideas and a sort no-nonsense kind of way about her. In other words she simply rubbed people the wrong way. Hewitt works hard to the gain the respect of the inmates and the guards and it is a joy to watch the steps she must take to get there. This is definitely one tough show to watch in that it’s pure drama at its best. Along with McTeer other members of the cast are Sophie Okonedo, Eamonn Walker, Derek Martin, Ron Donachie, and Idris Elba making this a well rounded cast.
