'Rake, Series 5: The Final Season' DVD Review

Cleaver Greene (Richard Roxburgh) is a disbarred Lawyer. When he was a practicing lawyer his clients included murderers, cannibals and bigamists just to name a few. He preferred these sorts because in his mind they were hopeless and more than likely guilty. Cleaver would use his wits and roguish ways to win many of his cases. He would acquire many friends along the way. So when he ran for an Australian Senate seat and won many people were happy he did. What makes this even more beautiful is that he ran on a campaign promise that if elected would do absolutely nothing.
In his first few days as Senator he would come up against a terrorist attack, a bad visit from the U. S Defense Secretary played by Anthony LaPaglia. He also has to contend with a right-wing nemesis played by Jane Turner.

Cleaver pretty much skated through life as a lawyer but it was when he became a Senator that he realizes that he’s in the thick of it. This final season of this wonderful show will make you wanting more but all you will be able to do is watch it over and over. Rake has been called one of the best on Australian TV. The show also stars Sara Wiseman, Matt Day, Jacek Koman, Mark Mitchinson, William McInnes, and Erroll Shand.

'The Heart Guy, Series 3' DVD Review

Hugh Knight (Rodger Corser) is a brilliant and a very arrogant heart surgeon. He was living in Sydney and had a very high life style. He began to have personal problems and his life spun out of control. His misdeeds brought him probation and he returned to his hometown of Whyhope, a rural town with that down home lifestyle. Hugh was looking forward to returning to Sydney when his probation came to a close,  but then tragedy struck and he inherited the family farm. Now this would be a good thing if it didn’t come along with an $11 million debt.

Hugh’s family reacted in different ways to the tragedy. Hugh’s Mother Meryl (Tina Bursill) and his brother Matt (Ryan Johnson) each reacted to their griefs in different ways. Charlie (Nicole da Silva), Matt’s wife complicates everything when an unexpected guest comes to visit and throws everything upside down. Hugh simply doesn’t know what to do. He has a comfortable lifestyle as a GP in Whyhope. He has a relationship going on with his boss Penny (Hayley McElhinney) which seems to be working out well for him. His family really could use his help with the farm and the debt that goes along with it. He also could simply leave and go back to the craziness of Sydney leaving everybody in a lurch.

'The Simple Heist' DVD Review

What do two women in their 60’s decide to do when they feel overlooked and under appreciated, simple they plan to rob a bank. Jenny (Lotta Tejle) is a teacher by trade but is going through a terrible divorce that is costing her a pretty penny. Cecilia (Sissela Kyle) is a gastroenterologist that made some bad investments in the stock market. Together they feel old and out of touch with the future and they want to turn things around. Cecilia learns of a plan for a bank robbery from a patient of hers that is dying. She talks to Jenny about the whole thing and tries to convince her that it would be the best for both of them to turn their lives around.

Now, this Swedish dramedy is superb. The women start off on their journey not really knowing what’s in store for them. Once the Robbery was committed the two women are exposed to blackmail. Some really interesting car chases. Finally, they become involved with a notorious and dangerous biker gang. What’s amazing is that Jenny and Cecilia come to understand is that money doesn’t really solve their problems. In reality it simply turns their world upside down.
The humor is very dry but will keep you in stitches.

'The Brokenwood Mysteries Series 5' DVD Review

Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea) was once a big city detective. He moved to Brokenwood awhile back because he wanted to get away from the big city ways. What he didn’t know about this New Zealand town was that murder and mayhem go hand in hand in this charming little town. He works alongside Detective Kristin Sims (Fern Sutherland) and DC Sam Breen (Nic Sampson). Sims is a native of Brokenwood.and seen much of all the stupidity that goes in this quaint little town.

This time around Shepherd and his team are investigating the death.of an amusement park owner. The ride he is murdered on is the haunted house. It seems that maybe a bachelorette party has gone terribly wrong in another episode. Another episode has a wills beneficiaries being targeted with some terrible happenings and finally someone gets electrocuted in what was an asylum that has been abandoned for some time.

One of the great factors of this series is the spectacular scenery. The show is filmed in the New Zealand countryside which something very special to the show. 'Mystery Road' DVD Review

The Australian outback is one of beauty and danger. Emma James (Judy Davis) is a local police sergeant who has an interesting case to solve. Two boys have gone missing from a remote cattle ranch  James calls in an indigenous detective by the name Jay Swan (Aaron Pedersen) to help with the case. The two don’t see eye to eye on how to approach the case of the missing boys. Adding to the troubles is the arrival of Swan’s daughter (Madeleine Madden). Swans daughter has many problems to deal with and this simply adds to the frustration between the the two policemen.

The investigation proceeds along with more problems than good news. The detectives find out many secrets about their little backward town. In doing so they inadvertently open up a can of worm that they really don’t want to deal with. When all is said and done the two will look at the towns past to find justice in the present.

The Australian outback is a land that for the most part is barren but the scenery can be breathtaking.
