'The Mad Adventures Of Rabbi Jacob' DVD Review

Victor Pivert  (Louis de Funes) is a French factory owner. He’s married but his wife believes he is in love with another woman. Victor’s wife is a dentist and is working on their daughter's upcoming marriage. Now, Victor is a very bigoted sort of guy and when you see him you question if anyone would want to marry him. The only thing he really has going for him is that he owns a factory and has money. One day Victor finds himself taken hostage by Mohammed Larbi Slimane (Claude Giraud). Mohammed is an Arab rebel leader who feels he can make a buck off of Victor. Problems arise though when Arab assassins from Mohammed’s homeland and the police come after the pair. The police think Victor is a murderer and the Arabs think Mohammed has turned on them. This all turns hilarious when the two begin wearing rabbis the outfits. They believe they can hide from both groups dressed up like rabbis. Victor poses as Rabbi Jacob a well thought of man who has come back to visit France for the first time in 30 years. Rabbi Jacob has lived in The United States all these years  and the neighborhood is filled with glee in his return.

This film was made in 1973 and is a cult classic that is a riot to watch. So with all the confusion Victor still has to be able to give his beloved daughter away in marriage. What makes this even funnier is that Rabbi Jacob (Marcel Dario) actually returns to France thus making this even more hilarious.

Film Movement brings this wonderful film to Blu-Ray on September 10th, 2019. The quality of the Blu-Ray is excellent and the sights and sounds are exquisite. This wonderful comedy will be an awesome addition to that personal library. So sit back and enjoy.

'The Third Wife' DVD Review

At the age of 14, May (Nguyen Phuong Tra My)  has arrived at the home of Hung (Le Vu Long) to become 'TheThird Wife'. Our story takes place in Vietnam during the 19th century. May comes to terms with her situation when she learns early on that the only way for her to have any sort of status in the house is that she must become a woman very quickly. In other words, Hung wants a male child and it doesn’t matter which wife gives it to him. May quickly learns how to seduce Hung and she does become pregnant which does give her some status in the home.

A problem arises when young May becomes attracted to the second wife Xuan (Mai Thu Huong Maya). Now remember this is rural Vietnam during the 19th century gay rights have not become a reality yet and this love affair could be very dangerous. May realizes she could play it safe and have Hung’s child and live quietly and safe or continue her affair and possibly die. Gun Control: Mind Over Matter

In the last decade this country has seen many mass shootings and after each shooting the federal government has said they will tackle the issue of gun control and universal background checks. Now, with two mass shootings earlier this month that took the lives of some thirty plus innocent victims the government still has done nothing. The Congress has been on summer break and the President went on vacation while families have been holding funerals for their loved ones.

There are those that say that simply having universal background checks will do nothing to curb the violence. That is probably true. A person wanting to purchase a weapon only has to find someone who wants to sell a gun and pay the money for it. Coming from a family that attended gun shows some fourteen or fifteen weekends a year, I was privy to gun sales without background checks all the time. Even when my father opened the gun shop we had to run background checks with all our gun sales, but that didn’t stop individuals from buying guns from someone else.

The idea of gun control by taking certain weapons off the street is also something that has been talked about for many years. The AR-15 that was used in one of the last mass shootings is usually sold as a single shot semi-automatic weapon, yet all you have to do is change one piece on the weapon and you have an automatic gun that can kill many. Some individuals like to take this gun hunting which makes the sport of hunting a thing of the past. The animal simply doesn’t have a chance.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has not recalled Congress, will not do so, and once again nothing will be done about these issues. The President simply talked with the head of the NRA gun lobby. All that came out of that meeting was universal background checks has been taken off the table. So, once again money talks and bullshit walks.

The one thing that no one wants to address is that it takes a finger to pull the trigger of these guns. Maybe just maybe, we should be looking at the mental health problems that these people are suffering from and addressing that issue. This country doesn’t look at the mental health issues that plagues us and take care of that problem. So, for now, many people will die due to the neglect of our leaders into finally addressing the issues that might stop the violence.

'Pixelia' DVD Review

Kumar (Sanal Aman) had been working in Kochi as a young corporate executive. He turned 30 and began to think that their has to be more to life than being a suit. So he took a job as an Uber driver and began to live his dream as an artist. His first work was a graphic novel he titled Pixelia. One day a transgender woman named Mandakini (Gowri Savithri) jumped into his cab and Kumar didn’t know what hit him. The two hit it off almost immediately. They would spend the rest of the day together discussing each other’s life. Kumar would talk about his novel. Mandakini would open up to Kumar about her desire to adopt a child. Kumar would come to realize that he was queer and that it didn’t bother him.  The two would come to realize that it would not be easy living together in a relationship that for an Indian couple is not of the norm.

India is not one of the country’s who has a large queer lifestyle and to have a couple where one is a transgender  is not of the norm.  The story is of love between two consenting adults and all the extra baggage should mean nothing at all. If only that was true. We live in a judge mental society and sometimes it’s tough just trying to get by  day-by day.

IndiePix Films brings this alternative love story to DVD on August 27th, 2019. The quality of the DVD is excellent and the sights and sounds are exquisite. The movie was made on what some would call a shoestring budget. Writer-Director Ratheesh Ravindran and 'Pixelia' would be his debut film. This will be an excellent addition to your personal library and you will enjoy it over and over.

'Damned Summer' DVD Review

'Damned Summer' could be called a documentary on the coming of age. Directed by first time Portuguese director Pedro Cabeleira our story is about a young college graduate by the name of Chico (Pedro Marujo). A young college graduate who continues his hedonistic ways. Chico’s summer begins at home. His grandparents and childhood memories give you a wholesome peaceful attitude. Until the night comes and that’s when all hell breaks loose. Lisbon is a beautiful city during the day and at night the burning passions of the young soul come to life.

Chico was a political science major who is part of a generation that once college is fulfilled they don’t seem to be able to find their place in society. This generation of youths can’t rid themselves of their bohemian lifestyles and cross over into adulthood.  For Chico and his friends nighttime brings another chance to party on psychedelics and get eventually get laid. The drugs of choice are marijuana and MDMA. The alcohol is there to wash down the bile in their mouths.
The techno music and psychedelic lights can be seen and heard through most of the film.  Lisbon is such a beautiful city during the day as well at night. The funny thing about this movie is you can honestly say it is a true to life film on many of our college age youths. Most are graduating with no where to go after graduation.

Pedro Cabeleira was 21 at the time of this filming so who better to know about today’s youth than one of its own. Indiepix Films brings this look at a generation lost to DVD on August 13th, 2019. The quality of the DVD is excellent and the sights and sounds are exquisite. This will be an excellent addition to your personal library. So don’t waste any time and pick this one up as soon as you can.

'Murdoch Mysteries, Season 12' DVD Review

Detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) is outstanding in his portrayal of an Edwardian Detective working in Toronto. He is methodical and charming in his approach to solving some of Toronto’s most gruesome murders. The period is the 1890’s and early 1900 hundreds and he uses the new age of forensics to help him solve these crimes. The new forensics include ultraviolet lights, trace evidence and fingerprinting and Murdoch uses them correctly.

In Season 12, Detective Murdoch and his wife Dr. Julia Ogden (Helene Joy) are now living in a new house. It’s modern and beautiful but it’s got some secrets that they learn about. Constable Crabtree ( Jonny Harris) is back and helping Higgins (Lachlan Murdoch) get ready for his upcoming wedding. Inspector Brackenreid ( Thomas Craig) has problems with someone from his past that could cause problems with him and his family.

Some of the cases in 'Murdoch Mysteries, Season 12' involve a case with an invisible man. Another deals with the murder of a French diplomat. Another case has Murdoch and his team facing an Alien invasion. In another case one of the team is accused of murder which throws everyone off. The beauty of this series is that from time to time the squad will have to deal with people like Nikola Tesla, architect Frank Lloyd Wright and entrepreneur Elizabeth Arden.
