'Rafiki' DVD Review

Homosexuality is not recognized around the world. In Kenya it is still very taboo. It is still believed that good young Kenyan girls will grow up to be good Kenyan wives. The idea of two women or two men being together is something that just can’t be tolerated. Kena (Samantha Mugatsia)is a young woman who helps her father run a small convenience store. Her father is at the time running in a local election. Her mother who she is living with is not really on speaking terms with her father.

Kena has been flirting with another girl by the name of Ziki (Sheila Munyiva). Ziki is a girl from the neighborhood with different colored hair. Zeki's father also happens to be a political rival of Kena's father.  Now the two young women start to date and it is very soon the they are feeling the love between them. Problem is they can’t show their affections to each other because it’s against the law in Kenya. Ziki's friends can’t stand the amount of time the two are spending together. Ziki’s friends attack Kena and Ziki takes Kena home to tend to her wounds. The two young women kiss and Ziki’s mother catches them. The two young women eventually run away but are found by the town gossip and are arrested. Ziki can’t stand to see the pressure that Kena is under and eventually Ziki is shipped off to London. Kena will eventually become a doctor and Ziki will return home. The two women will get back together and their love for each other brings them together once again.

Film Movement brings this wonderful story to DVD on August 13th, 2019. The quality of the DVD is excellent and the sights and sounds are exquisite. This is definitely one for that personal library as it is a story of true love. It’s time for all of this Planet to come together and enjoy life for what it is. Enjoy.
